Getting Started

Getting started is easy & you get to fly on your very first lesson!

Step 1: TRY IT OUT

Before you invest your time and money in learning how to fly, you need to decide if flying is for you. The only way to truly tell if you want to learn to fly is to get up there and fly an airplane. Take a first lesson or one of our packaged flights. You can read about them here.

If you decide right then and there that you're ready to continue, simply make your next flight lesson appointment with the front desk! That's it - you're on your way .

Step 2: Sign up for ground school & begin taking flight lessons

After you've taken your first flight and have caught what we call "the flying bug," we urge you to dive right in!

Our office staff will provide you with online access to our scheduling system where you can schedule your lessons around YOUR schedule. We are open 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. - Just ask us for login access! You will always have the option of calling to schedule a lesson too.

Your instructor will lead you through our Syllabus and cater each lesson to your learning curve. You will never be going through the flight training process alone - We'll be with you every step of the way answering every question you might have.

Step 3: Get the tools you need to succeed

You've taken your first few lessons and might have already signed up for ground school. Now you need a few basic items that you'll use throughout your entire life as a Private pilot. They are the tools of the trade. Nassau Flyers owns the only pilot shop at Republic Airport, and we carry everything you will need.

  • Headset - You will need a headset to communicate with your flight instructor and any passengers in the airplane. This is one of the more expensive investments you will make but one of the most important too.

  • VFR Sectional Chart - This is a map used to navigate.

  • E6B - A fancy word for an aviation calculator. There are paper ones and electronic ones. Talk to your instructor to see which one best suites your needs.

  • Protractor - We use a protractor to plot courses and figure out distances.

  • A Knee board - You'll want an easy way to take notes while flying. A knee board helps you organize your cockpit and keeps a piece of paper and a pen handy to jot down notes.

  • Flight Bag - Finally you'll need a place to put all of this stuff. A sturdy flight bag is useful for organizing your flight gear. We carry a large selection of flight bags and urge you to compare styles out to see which one fits your needs.
